Co-Executive Director – Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization

During drought seasons we have lots of dry grass around and it only takes one spark for a fire outbreak. Our four main causes of fire outbreak are fireworks, campfires, equipment and machinery that sparks and then natural causes such as lava or lightning. One of our main talking points is, if you’re going to have to use welding equipment or any equipment that sparks in open grassy areas, at wait until it’s not windy and definitely don’t do it on a dry day. But people have work to do, they have to think about that choice. At the end of the day, they have to decide if they are willing to take the risk as it also involves their livelihood and survival.
